Dr Brendan Cooper appointed as President of the Academy for Healthcare Science

Respiratory Physiologist Dr Brendan Cooper, Consultant Clinical Scientist and Hon. Research Fellow at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), has been appointed as the first President of the Academy for Healthcare Science.

The AHCS President is the chief professional representative of the Academy, liaising with constituents and then articulating the views of the profession to government, the health & care system and other stakeholders.

Academy backs Choosing Wisely campaign to reduce unnecessary tests and treatments.

The Academy of Healthcare Science has put its support behind the “Choosing Wisely” campaign by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) that aims to reduce unnecessary diagnostics and treatments for patients. Academy President Dr Brendan Cooper has stressed the importance of the healthcare scientist input into the multidisciplinary teams that assess and analyse treatment and diagnostic options. 

Learning the lessons of system leadership in Healthcare Science

The Academy for Healthcare Science Professional Scientific Leadership Committee is to consider the implications of the Kings Fund report The Practice of System Leadership – being comfortable with chaos for the Healthcare Science profession.

Heidi Cox wins AHCS Award for Innovation at Advancing Healthcare Awards

Senior Clinical Biochemist Heidi Cox, from Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, has won the Academy for Healthcare Science award for Innovation at the 2015 Advancing Healthcare Awards for her work developing the SUDI box, used to help determine the cause of sudden infant death.

More professional assessors sought to boost Academy assessment teams

The Academy is seeking Healthcare Science professionals to come forward as professional assessors for our scientist and practitioner panels due to the increasing level of interest in our equivalence process.

AHCS and RCCP agree joint statement on closer collaboration

The Academy for Healthcare Science and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists have agreed a joint statement on closer collaboration following their meeting on 22 May.

Job Vacancy: Development Co-ordinator

The Academy are recruiting for a Development Co-ordinator, to coordinate the project management of the delivery of new routes to registration, including equivalence processes. Applications should be submitted by 23 June 2015.

Apply now for funded Masters courses in Genomic Medicine

Healthcare Scientists are being invited to apply for funded places on a new MSc in Genomic Medicine with associated CPD modules through the Health Education England Genomics Education Programme (GEP), with the first intake taking place in September 2015.

The course is being delivered through a national network of 9 universities and provides a multi-disciplinary and multi-professional programme in genomics that can be applied to both clinical practise and medical research. More information about the course and how to apply is available through the GEP website.

Scottish National Healthcare Science Conference – sign up by 1 June

NHS Education for Scotland is holding its 2015 National Event for Healthcare Science – NDP 2015 Contribution is Key –  at COSLA in Edinburgh on 19 Jun 2015. The programme brings together a number of senior figures from across the Scottish healthcare system, with a keynote presentation by Michael Kellett, Director of Healthcare Strategy with the Scottish Government. Deadline for registration is 1 June.

New Healthcare Science qualifications launched at Assistant & Associate Level

Two new BTEC introductory vocational qualifications have been developed as part of the Modernising Scientific Careers programme to facilitate entry into Healthcare Science.

The qualifications – BTEC Level 2 Certificate Introduction to Healthcare Science, and BTEC Level 4 Certificate in Healthcare Science – will be available for training providers registered by Pearson as an approved centre to deliver the new qualifications.
