PSA endorse the Medical Illustrator part of the Academy’s Register

The Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) and the Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Illustration Practitioners (CAMIP) are delighted to announce that endorsement has been received from the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA) to extend the AHCS Accredited Register to include Medical Illustrators.

This decision (available here) means that individuals previously on the CAMIP Register will now be transferred to the Medical Illustrator part of the AHCS Accredited Register with effect from 31st March 2017. Individuals who have not previously been registered with CAMIP but meet the Register Standards (available here) will be able to apply directly via the AHCS website.

Medical Illustrator is a generic name for those healthcare professionals who work as clinical photographers, video producers, medical artists and medical graphic designers. They provide a multi-skilled support service to those involved in patient care, teaching, education and research in the health sciences. Using their skills they produce resource materials such as photographs and other graphic images for use in patient care, education and teaching. Working as part of the healthcare team, medical illustrators spend their time working with clinical and nursing staff and other professionals involved in delivering direct patient care.

Joining the AHCS Register shows commitment to maintaining standards of education, competence and conduct and provides assurance for employers, patients and the public.

Professional Standards Authority accreditation means that the Academy has met the Authority’s demanding standards of governance. These include standards setting, education and training, management of the register, provision of information and complaints handling.

Janet Monkman, AHCS Chief Executive, said “The Academy is delighted to have been able to help such a committed group achieve their ambition and we look forward to welcoming registrants and continuing to work with colleagues at the Institute of Medical Illustrators”.
CAMIP issued the following statement:

CAMIP has maintained its Register of Medical Illustrators for over 25 years and we now welcome this decision by the PSA to extend the Academy for Healthcare Science’s Accredited Register to include our own. This is a significant step for the profession and underlines our commitment to maintaining standards and to patient confidentiality and protection.

We strongly recommend that all CAMIP registrants now re-register annually with the AHCS and that any non-registered individual working professionally in the UK as a medical illustrator should seek registration with the AHCS.
