Action needed to make genomics work in fight against infectious disease – report
A new report sets out the potential for genomics to help the health service in the fight against infectious diseases – but warns of barriers that could delay the health benefits for patients.
The report Pathogen Genomics Into Practice, by health policy think-tank PHG Foundation, outlines both the potential for genomics to help combat infectious diseases and also the challenges that could delay the benefits for the health system.
The report covers four areas of action:
- Data analysis, knowledge generation and sharing for service development and delivery
- Configuring clinical and public health services
- Standards, validation and accreditation across the clinical pathway
- Strategic coordination and development
and provides 35 recommendations to ensure that the potential of genomics technologies are delivered in practise.
Alongside the report and an executive summary, the authors have produced a policy roadmap for decision-makers, setting out the different areas for action in order to realise the full benefits of pathogen genomics on patient and population health.
