Dr Brendan Cooper appointed as first AHCS President

Respiratory Physiologist Dr Brendan Cooper, Consultant Clinical Scientist and Hon. Research Fellow at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), has been appointed as the first President of the Academy for Healthcare Science.

Dr Brendan Cooper Academy for Healthcare Science President

Brendan leads the 28-strong lung function diagnostic and therapeutic team at UHB and has significant research interests. He is well known in the Healthcare Science community as the long-standing Chair and subsequent President of the Association for Respiratory  Technology & Physiology (ARTP). He also has strong links with the diagnostic and life sciences industry and has provided advice on device development and clinical trials.

The AHCS President is the chief professional representative of the Academy, liaising with constituents and then articulating the views of the profession to government, the health & care system and other stakeholders.  The President also chairs the Professional Council of the Academy and represents the Academy at external events. The President serves a two-year term.

Brendan said:

“I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed the first President of the Academy for Healthcare Science and I am determined to use my time in the post to showcase the amazing work that is being done by the profession up and down the country and to remind people how important our work is to the NHS and the delivery of high quality services for our patients. Given the noise in the system from the ongoing changes, we need to shout ever louder to remind people of the importance of Healthcare Science and to ensure we punch our weight as a profession.”

AHCS Chairman Sir Duncan Nichol CBE said:

I am delighted we have been able to attract a healthcare scientist of the calibre and capability of Brendan to be the first President of the Academy and his professional stature will prove an invaluable asset to the Academy team.”
