National Voices share article on patient experiences of medical device prescription

National Voices, commissioned by the DHSC, have conducted research into patient experiences of medical devices prescribed outside hospital under Part IX of the NHS Drug Tariff. The findings show patient voice directly shaping national policy and device design.

Key Findings:

  • Patients value devices that support independence, dignity and quality of life, not just clinical effectiveness.
  • Comfort, fit and appearance strongly affect wellbeing and confidence.
  • Choice matters — different features work for different people; there is no one‑size‑fits‑all solution.
  • Inclusive design is essential, reflecting diverse skin tones, sensory needs and dexterity.
Following this research, the DHSC will incentivise manufacturers to reduce inequalities through a new ‘value add’ component in the Part IX Quality Evaluation Framework.
