National Physiological Science Transformation Strategy

AHCS are pleased to share the new Physiological Science Strategy, developed by the National Physiological Science Transformation Programme, which sets out a clear direction for strengthening and modernising these vital diagnostic services across England. Physiological Science tests are central to many patient pathways, providing real-time insight into how the body is functioning and support critical clinical decisions in areas such as hearing, cardiac, respiratory and sleep disorders. When access to these tests is delayed, it affects outcomes, experience and equity of care.

AHCS are please to support this work, aligned to the core aims of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, promoting care closer to home, greater use of digital innovation, and earlier diagnosis and prevention. The plan sets out practical actions to improve access, quality & safety, productivity, and integration, underpinned by investment in a skilled workforce and consistent national standards.

The strategy explicitly recognises and values your essential contribution as healthcare scientists, clinical physiologists, practitioners, technical and support staff, and the hard work you put in every day to deliver high quality Physiological Science services as part of the wider diagnostic and clinical offer. It sets out practical actions to support you by improving productivity, better integrating services across pathways, and investing in our future workforce.

The National Physiological Science Transformation Programme encourage you to review the strategy, consider how its priorities can be reflected in your local plans and pathways, and download and share it with your teams and partners so that your efforts translate into tangible improvements for our patients.
