Scottish Government publish Healthcare Science: Redefining our workforce
Yesterday, the Scottish Government published the second paper in their Healthcare Science in Scotland series titled Healthcare Science: Redefining Our Workforce. This paper sets out a refreshed approach to the healthcare science workforce in Scotland and was launched by Professor Catherine Ross, Chief Scientific Officer for Scottish Government (pictured).
The document informs how Scottish Government will now define the healthcare science workforce in Scotland.
Key priorities include:
-
Raising the visibility, recognition and strengthen the identity of the healthcare science workforce in Scotland.
- Working with NHS Boards to apply consistent naming conventions across professional groupings, specialisms and levels of practice.
-
Strengthening leadership structures and workforce planning by introducing the requirement for specific leadership for healthcare science at a local level through the appointment of a Scientific Director in each
NHS Board, so that scientific talent is fully utilised in service delivery and future health system reform. -
Ensuring career pathways and education frameworks are equipped to meet emerging demands in diagnostics, genomics, and data science.
The paper offers a clear mandate to enhance professional recognition and influence within the health system.
