British Academy of Audiology (BAA) Publish Scope of Practice for Audiology Professionals

BAA are pleased to announce the release of the updated British Academy of Audiology (BAA) Scope of Practice for Audiology Professionals, which is now available to download from the BAA website and is linked below.

The link to download is here: https://baaudiology.org/new-baa-scope-of-practice-released/

This eagerly-anticipated document has been developed by the BAA Education Portfolio, drawing on the expertise of professionals from a wide range of sectors and specialisms. It will be reviewed every three years and revised as required to reflect developments within audiology.

The Scope of Practice sets out:

  • The clinical and professional capabilities of audiology professionals.
  • Expectations of audiologists in practice.
  • Clear links between career levels and professional capabilities.

Please note, the document is not designed as a guide to Agenda for Change (AfC) bandings or job planning. Instead, it provides a framework to help professionals identify their scope of practice, work within its boundaries, and recognise training and development needs to extend their capabilities where appropriate.

BAA also wish to highlight that while registration as an audiologist with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) remains voluntary, it is the position of the British Academy of Audiology that professionals should maintain registration. Doing so demonstrates a commitment to professional standards and continuing professional development, and supports parity with colleagues registered as Clinical Scientists or Hearing Aid Dispensers with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Looking ahead, BAA will be developing further guidance on applying the Scope of Practice within the NHS. This will include mapping career levels to AfC bandings, supporting effective job planning, and providing indicative appointment timings to aid workforce planning.

BAA encourage all audiology professionals to review this important document and consider how it applies to their own practice.
