WANTED – more volunteer online mentors with specialisms in Life Sciences

The Mullany Fund are a social mobility organisation based at Swansea University that run an e-Mentoring programme for young people to provide them with support on their studies, future career paths and, where appropriate, accessing higher education. The focus is on those with a broad interest in life sciences or those who know which career path they would like to pursue. We are a widening access charity so we prioritise students from less advantaged backgrounds. Students joining the scheme are from South Wales.

We are currently trying to recruit more volunteer online mentors, with specialisms in healthcare sciences, to support our students.   We have a lot of interest from young people at the moment, so your support would be invaluable and could really help some of the young people involved.

If you are interested in supporting a young person, who might not be able to obtain support elsewhere,  to reach their career goal, please do sign up to our next e-Mentoring session as a volunteer!

The next session runs from 30th September-6th December.  We will be open to all year groups from year 9, and anticipate a large number signing up for the autumn session. When you sign up via the registration form you will be given the options of mentoring across three speciality areas. We try and match these as closely as possible with the interests of the students who sign up, although you should be aware that sometimes students enrolled are at the point where they just need help to decide. We hope you can mentor up to three students, but just let us know if you would like fewer students and we will ensure that, if you are matched, you are allocated only the number you agree to.

This autumn, we are also hoping to attract older students by offering e-Mentoring support around the primary and secondary research skills required for the Individual Project of the Welsh Baccalaureate ( level 16+ years) If you feel that you could offer this specific area of support you should click Primary and Secondary research skills as one of your speciality areas on the registration form. The autumn will be a pilot for this, so we still need to understand demand from students, in this area.

Although this is a voluntary position we would very much hope that mentors could gain from the skills that they learn through their involvement which might contribute to their continuing professional development. You will need a DBS  which is three years in date for the end of the session ( ie latest acceptable be 6th December 2016), but if you don’t have one you can apply through us, and we will cover the costs  (instructions on how to do this will appear once registered). You can sign up here!

You can also find out more about being a mentor, here!
