HCPC Consultation on revised Standards for Prescribing

HCPC has announced that on Wednesday 20 March 2019, their Council decided to:

  • change the requirements to ensure practice supervisors are prescribers who are appropriately qualified and experienced to supervise learners, rather than a ‘Designated Medical Practitioner’;
  • adopt the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s A Competency Framework for all Prescribers as the standards for all prescribers; and
  • include several new standards for education providers so the prescribing standards are more closely aligned with the Standards of education and training (SETs).

These decisions were taken following strong support from respondents to the consultation for their proposals. You can read the analysis of the responses that we received.

The revised Standards for prescribing will apply from September 2019, the beginning of the 2019/20 academic year. Read more about how we expect approved programmes in prescribing to implement the revised standards.

HCPC are also working closely with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to develop a Prescribing Supervisor Competency Framework.
