Press Release: Clinical Physiologists
The Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) is delighted to announce that endorsement has been received from the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA) to extend the AHCS Accredited Register to include a Register for Clinical Physiologists.
Clinical Physiologists will sit within the AHCS accredited register framework, alongside Higher Specialist Scientist, Practitioner and Medical Illustrator parts of the register.
Joining the AHCS Register shows commitment to maintaining standards of education, competence and conduct and provides assurance for employers, patients and the public.
Professional Standards Authority accreditation means that the Academy has met the Authority’s demanding standards of governance. These include standards setting, education and training, management of the register, provision of information and complaints handling.
Patricia le Rolland, Chair of the Regulation Council, said “The Academy is extremely pleased that we now hold the accredited register for Clinical Physiologists. It is a natural fit for the Academy’s register for the Healthcare Science workforce and further embodies our One Voice approach. Being on an accredited register is increasingly recommended across the UK; at a national level and by employing organisations, service providers, commissioners and patients who are increasingly viewing registration as essential for showing commitment to the quality of practise”.
Elaine Gribben, the Academy’s Professional Group Lead for Physiology said that “Professional Standards Authority Accreditation of the Clinical Physiology part of the Academy register is the closest thing to statutory regulation that is available for the Clinical Physiology professions. This is a “seal of approval” conferred by the Regulators’ Regulator on the standards of education, training, and professionalism that are required for registration with the Academy and also on the robust Quality Assurance mechanisms that the Academy has in place.”

To apply, you must be a practising Clinical Physiologist who has completed a recognised Clinical Physiology education programme. A list of approved programmes can be accessed here – (other courses will be added to the approved list shortly).
This list of approved programmes is shown in the form of a ‘drop down’ option when you apply to join the register via the website. No post-qualification experience is required.
