Healthcare science in Scotland – national event in Edinburgh 15th June “Delivering Realistic Healthcare Science”.
This reflects a recent Scottish Government paper regarding Realistic Medicine.

The annual national event is the key networking and awareness raising event for Healthcare Science in Scotland. Now in its 10th year, the event provides healthcare leaders, decision-makers and frontline staff a unique opportunity to listen, learn, but most importantly, participate in discussions about how Healthcare Scientists can lead and influence the future shape of healthcare delivery in Scotland.
Our annual event will focus on the Chief Medical Officer’s message of Realising Realistic Medicine. This puts the person receiving health and care at the centre of decision-making and creates a personalised approach to their care. It aims to reduce harm, waste and unwarranted variation, all while managing risks and innovating to improve.
Our keynote speaker is Dr Dave Caesar, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. He was appointed as the National Clinical Advisor on Secondary Care, including Major Trauma, to the Chief Medical Officer in February 2016. He is also engaging with the clinical workforce and civil service on the National Clinical Strategy, Realistic Medicine, workforce issues and medical leadership.
You will hear how the themes of Realistic Medicine have resonated with all professions providing health and social care. Here, ‘medicine’ does not solely apply to the work carried out by medical doctors – it should be considered as the broad concept of using skills and knowledge to maintain health and to prevent, identify and treat illness. It is impossible to achieve Realistic Medicine without a truly multidisciplinary approach, appreciating the varied skills and experience of the health and social care workforce in Scotland. It is more important now than ever to gain a shared understanding of what Realistic Medicine means in different health and social care contexts.
The annual event will celebrate the work of Healthcare Scientists as we aim to drive improvement and work collaboratively within a multi-stakeholder environment. Our workshops have a variety of different topical areas, such as how we can transform our workforce, examples of quality improvement in action, how HCS contribute to service delivery in the community, what’s happening within science registration, along with how can we practise a realistic Healthcare Science approach within a shared services environment.

Posters are invited from your area of Healthcare Science, to share and learn from each other across Scotland. Have you made changes to the way you deliver your service and have you evaluated these changes? Have you pioneered innovative ways of working? Have you delivered local service improvements that merit wider dissemination? If you have, why not share your experience with your colleagues at this year’s number one event for HCS in Scotland.
