Welcome to Vox – The membership newsletter bringing the latest information and updates from the Academy for Healthcare Science, together with news from across the Healthcare Science profession.
Come and speak to the Academy at #LTO14
The Academy for Healthcare Science is having a strong presence at the #LTO14 Healthcare Science conference (31 March & 1 Apriil) , including running breakout sessions on Equivalence and Registration as part of the conference programme and hosting an information stand. We’re also holding a prize draw competition for those who come along to our stand.
If you’re not able to attend #LTO14, the Academy’s presentations and material will be available to download from the AHCS website after the event.
The #LTO14 event will also host the 2014 Healthcare Science Awards on the evening of Monday 31 March. The full list of 28 finalists across the six award categories can be found on the AHCS website.
Government Innovation Bill proposals fail to extend beyond doctors
The Department of Health is currently consulting on a proposed Medical Innovation Bill that sets out to remove the barriers that prevent innovation which can save and improve lives. However the Bill as drafted only mentions innovation in the context of doctors.
The Academy is currently developing a response to the consultation. If you have particular views that you think we should include in the consultation, please send them to so we can meet the consultation deadline of 28 April 2014.
Keep sending in your key issues in Healthcare Science
As part of our role as the single overarching body for Healthcare Science, we are pulling together a briefing for policy-makers and opinion-formers about the key issues facing the profession at the moment.
Many of you have already sent in your views about the three single biggest issues facing Healthcare Science at the moment are. We will then pull these together into an anonymised report. We will use to inform our influencing activity and ensure the voice of the profession is heard at the highest level.
We’re looking to capture as wide a range of views from the profession – covering all scientific specialisms and all career levels. Have your say by taking part in the survey at www.ahcs.ac.uk/3issues14. Please share this link with your colleagues and encourage them to give us their views too.
Develop the profession’s Academic foundations through the NIHR HEE Healthcare Science Fellowships
The fifth round of NIHR HEE Healthcare Science Fellowships is now open for applications. (previously known as the CSO Research Fellowships).
These research awards fund research at three levels – Doctoral, Post-Doctoral and Clinical Academic Fellowships and are an important part of the academic underpinning of Healthcare Science as a profession.
Full details of the awards and how to apply are on the NIHR Trainees Coordinating Centre website. Applications must be submitted by 28 May 2014

We’re bringing together a group of those people currently undergoing Healthcare Science training programmes and in the early years of their professional careers to help shape the future of the profession and set out the issues for this part of the workforce.

IPEM premiere Healthcare Science careers video
IPEM (the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine) have premiered a new careers film aimed at secondary school and undergraduate students as part of National Healthcare Science week. It is also available on the IPEM website. The film outlines the range of careers available to physicists and engineers in health & care and to inspire them to take up a career in Healthcare Science.
National Pathology Programme sets out views on use of digital technologies
The National Pathology Programme in NHS England has published its Digital First report, highlighting how innovation in the use of digital systems and processes used in pathology services across the country is transforming services for patients.
The National Pathology Programme is also working with the Health & Social Care Information Centre to produce a National Laboratory Medicine Catalogue (NLMC) which will deliver robust, comprehensive, nationally consistent and comparable information on pathology services.

The National School for Healthcare Science have published their March e-Bulletin including updates on the recruitment processes for HSST and the 2014 intake for the Scientist Training Programme, the upcoming OSFA assessment programme for July and August this year and the latest staffing changes at the NSHCS.
