How the AHCS President Celebrated Healthcare Science Week

This year, Healthcare Science Awareness Week took place between 13– 20 March, celebrating the great work and people involved in this sector. As part of the awareness week, our President Brendan Cooper was involved in a number of initiatives to help spread the positive message about Healthcare Science.

At the beginning of the week, our President was reporting on sleep studies and attended a sleep clinic. At the same time he was also preparing  for the forthcoming events for the week ahead.

Following on in the same vein, Tuesday involved more sleep science, teaching respiratory physiology as part of a Sleep Course at Edinburgh University. Here the focus was on the methods used to monitor and diagnose sleep breathing disorders. The talk was so well received that Brendan missed intended flight home. Perhaps a session on the science of time travel would be useful next year!

The rest of the week was spent at various awareness meetings and exhibitions, all in the name of Healthcare Science. Fiona Carragher (Deputy CSO) and Brendan attended the UHB Healthcare Science Awareness meeting on Wednesday, which included speakers from NSHCS, STP students and UHB board members. It was one of the most enthusiastic events, filled with great examples of Healthcare Science work, including the CSO Award Winners in Molecular Pathology presenting their excellent work.

Healthcare Science Awareness Week for us culminated in the awareness exhibition, which brought a number of great scientists together to exhibit their diagnostic services. On display at the Atrium of QEHB, many schoolchildren attended the event and completed a Health Passport.

This year AHCS were proud to be involved with Healthcare Science Awareness week, raising the profile of the industry at all levels from practicing clinics right down to the next generation of possible Healthcare Science professionals.
