New Year's Honours recognise healthcare scientists

Congratulations go to Professor Allan Pacey,  Neil Bentley and Prof Stephen Smye who were recognised in the 2015 New Year’s Honours for their work in Healthcare Science

Allan Pacey was awarded the MBE  as Professor of Andrology, Department of Oncology and Metabolism, University of Sheffield. For services to Reproductive Medicine. Allan is an acclaimed andrologist, with a strong research portfolio, who went to be the first scientist to chair the multiprofessional British Fertility Society. Allen is also committed to communicating science to patients and the public and has made frequent media appearances to explain the complexities of human reproduction.

Neil Bentley was awarded the OBE as Head of Specialist Microbiology Technical Services, Public Health England. For services to Public Health. Neil played a particularly important role in Public Health England’s response to the Ebola crisis, travelling to Sierra Leone to work with colleagues from MOD, DFID, PHE and the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health to set up three PHE laboratories which transformed the identification and diagnosis of Ebola in the country.

Stephen Smye was awarded the OBE  as Theme Lead, National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network. For services to Healthcare Research.
. Stephen is a medical physicist by background who built up a reputation for research and innovation at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and Leeds University before becoming a director of the NIHR Clinical Research Network
