Strategic review of Cardiac Physiology services – final report published
The joint review into cardiac physiology services in England by the SCST (Society for Cardiological Science and Technology) and the BCS (British Cardiovascular Society) has been published, setting out 12 recommendations to transform services and patients’ experience of cardiovascular disease care.
The Review was set up to make recommendations across the health and care system about the innovations in service delivery, models of care and workforce configuration which are needed to transform patients’ experience of cardiovascular disease care. It has anticipated the vision for change outlined in the NHS Five Year Forward View and the recommendations which recognise the need to introduce new technologies, new systems for data management, to deliver services over seven days (where required), and to pursue ongoing innovation.
The 12 recommendations cover:
- service extension and redesign
- transforming IT to allow transfer of patient images and data
- structured ‘horizon-scanning’ to identify new innovations
- quality standards – with all services required to be accredited through the IQIPS scheme
- action to tackle the workforce shortage in cardiac physiology at all levels, including local staffing strategies, additional training places and developing workforce data
- extension of consultant clinical scientist roles
- reevaluation and improvement of existing data for commissioners
