Academy supports AoMRC Choosing Wisely campaign

The Academy of Healthcare Science has put it support behind the “Choosing Wisely” campaign by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC),  which aims to reduce unnecessary diagnostics and treatments for patients.

The AHCS, which represent over 50,000 Healthcare Scientists in the UK has seen unprecedented demands on scientific services (Airflow obstruction to zygote testing) in the last 2 years.

However, despite competent management of this increased workload and maintenance of high standards of quality, some rationalisation of demand must occur especially in the light of the looming financial NHS crisis.

The newly appointed President of AHCS, Dr Brendan Cooper said:

“What is more concerning is the risk that unnecessary diagnostic tests may be using up valuable healthcare scientist resource which should be used to detect and monitor expensive long term conditions

“Appropriate and intelligent testing by well trained and integrated multi-disciplinary teams – which include Healthcare Scientists – is the most cost-effective way to deliver modern healthcare.  This is why we wholeheartedly support the AoMRC campaign”
