The NHS Innovation Challenge Prizes encourage, recognise and reward front line innovation and drive spread and adoption of these innovations across the NHS through targeted funding to NHS organisations and other professional support.

This year the prizes will be awarded for:

  • Diabetes challenge 1 – £100,000
  • Diabetes challenge 2 – £100,000
  • Infection control challenge – £50,000
  • Use of technology challenge – £100,000
  • Rehabilitation challenge – 2 x £75,000
  • Digital patient and clinician engagement challenge – £100,000
  •  ‘Acorn’ challenge  (small ideas)– 5 x £10,000

Only NHS organisations in England can apply for a prize (i.e. the lead applicant) and applications are open from 15 September 2014 to 17:30 on 7 November 2014.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a 30 minute Dragon’s Den type session in November 2014 where they will present their innovation to a group of challenge specific experts. This group will look for applicants to demonstrate that their innovations are proven, have the potential for spread and adoption and support NHS England’s objectives.

Results from the Dragon’s Dens will then be shared a wider Expert Panel who will make recommendations to NHS England’s CEO and National Medical Director for their sign-off in January 2015, with the final winners announced in February.

More information and guidance is available, and details of how to apply, are available from the Innovation Challenge Pages of the NHS England website.
